Tom Roberts is a multi-award winning documentary film director, producer and executive producer with dozens of films to his credit. His most recent film Every Last Child was commissioned by The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation and The Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi with the purpose of rallying philanthropists to help eradicate polio from Pakistan forever. Prior to that Tom spent time in Riyadh making a feature length film about Saudi firemen titled Brotherhood and Courage.

He has extended his directing work into drama and in 2013 completed a drama-documentary on Nelson Mandela for ITV. Tom’s first dramatic feature film, In Tranzit, starred John Malkovich, Thomas Kretschmann, Daniel Bruhl and Vera Farmiga.

Roberts began his directing career at the BBC in the 1980’s before leaving to make The Other Europe, Channel Four’s epic series on communism in Eastern Europe. Soon after, Roberts founded his own production company, October Films, which rapidly built a reputation for producing distinctive feature-length documentary films. The company has won well over a hundred international awards.

Throughout this time, Roberts continued to direct, making films on subjects as diverse as Stalin’s purges, the Arab/Israeli conflict, the crisis of manhood in South Africa, and a controversial series about runaway children in the UK.

He produced and directed a trilogy about the wars of 9/11. Afghanistan’s Dirty War investigated the deadly bombing of Azizzabad, The Insurgency was the first serious investigation of the Iraqi opposition, and A Company of Soldiers followed a combat team in Baghdad. The latter two films were nominated for a BAFTA and a Grierson – adding to his personal total of over 45 awards and nominations.

His film Ghosts of the 7th Cavalry is an emotionally powerful story combining a personal search for redemption by a white American veteran of Korea and Vietnam with a trenchant analysis of US’ exploitation of indigenous peoples.

Tom’s experience and skills in developing documentary content are second to none and we are proud to announce that he has joined Independent Films long form documentary division, IndyDoc, to devote his energies to brand commissioned documentary content. He has always been a pioneer in his field and we believe that there is a huge future in coupling brands up with long form documentary film and webisodes.
